Downtown Aquarium, Denver
The Downtown Aquarium is one of the more famous attractions in the city, and it’s easy to see why. It is an aquarium, entertainment center and restaurant all in one and houses more than 500 species of marine life. There are a wide variety of exhibits, including Under the Sea, which focuses on undersea life on coral reefs. Another one is In the Desert, which showcases animals that live in harsh desert environments.
One of the best known attractions at the Downtown Aquarium is the mermaid show in the Under the Sea section. The mermaids perform a choreographed routine to music as they swim with stingrays, sea turtles, and many different types of fish.
The Aquarium also has a Lounge and Restaurant, where you are seated in a dining room with giant floor-to-ceiling tanks filled with tropical fish for a unique dining experience.
Denver Museum of Nature and Science

Littleton History Museum
Located just fifteen minutes from downtown Denver, the Littleton History Museum lets you take a look back in time. Situated next to Ketring Lake, the museum has several exhibitions, interactive galleries, a collections center and two farm sites.
The farm sites are definitely the highlight of visiting the museum, as you can observe staff and volunteers dressed in authentic costumes working the farms and tending to the cows and sheep. The farm sites also include a blacksmith forge and a one-room schoolhouse. You are welcome to talk to the farmhands, schoolteacher, and blacksmith to learn about what life was like in the 19th century.
The Butterfly Pavilion
As a non-profit zoo that focuses on invertebrates, The Butterfly Pavilion is definitely unique. It is fifteen minutes from Downtown Denver and is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. year round.
The highlight of the zoo is its indoor conservatory where you can observe more than 1600 butterflies flying freely. You can also say hello to Rosie the tarantula, visit horseshoe crabs and sea stars, and check out the exhibits.
There are a few outdoor nature trails you and the kids can explore if the weather is mild. The Butterfly Pavilion also features educational programs and events throughout the year.
Hammond’s Candy Factory
The Hammond’s factory tour gives kids and adults an inside look at how candy canes, lollipops and other treats are made. Video screens are installed throughout the factory to show each step of the candy making process. During the tour you will learn the history of Hammond’s, candy making facts, and will be given a freshly made treat to take home.
The tours run every half hour when the factory is open, and last about thirty minutes. While you are there, also be sure to check out Hammond’s store. There you can buy their candy canes and lollipops, and see an old-fashioned chocolate counter in action. Hammond’s is the perfect place to go to sample some sweet treats – and see how they are made.
